Torch Calories with the Turkey Burner Workout!
We all know it's that time of year again to express our need to get back in shape. Enough of the excuses because I found a quick, very efficient workout for anybody with a "busy" schedule. Challenge yourself through each set and keep track of time so you can accurately measure progress. No excuses! This workout can be done just about anywhere; indoors, outdoors, living room with the little ones, backyard, garage, master bedroom, neighborhood park, even at the office with your accountability partners. Don't forget to warm up and cool down. Enjoy! Michael Ginn
"The basic workout circuit consists of five equipment-free exercises. Perform the number of reps listed with each, and do them in this order. For detailed instructions for each move, scroll below the workout graphic."
Workout Instructions
If you're more of a beginner, simply get through the circuit at your own pace, resting as needed. Repeat it one more time if you feel up to it. If you're an intermediate exerciser, push through three continuous sets of the circuit with little to no rest. Foradvanced exercisers, set a timer for your desired workout length—such as 10, 15 or 20 minutes (recommended)—and then repeat the circuit as many times as possible (aka AMRAP) for time. But make sure to never sacrifice... Read More

Riding the Wave of Surfer Fitness
To the casual spectator, surfing seems to involve primarily balance, grace, nervy insouciance and a certain laid-back, ineffable oneness with the powers of the deep. But a series of newly published studies of the actual physical demands of surfing reveal that other, sometimes surprising aspects of fitness may be as important to surfing success as the ability to judge and remain upright on a swell.
For the first of the new studies, which was published last month in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, scientists at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand recruited 12 professional New Zealand surfers and asked to follow them throughout several competitions.

Inactivity 'killing as many as smoking'
A lack of exercise is now causing as many deaths as smoking across the world, a study suggests.
The report, published in the Lancet to coincide with the build-up to the Olympics, estimates that about a third of adults are not doing enough physical activity, causing 5.3m deaths a year.
That equates to about one in 10 deaths from diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and breast and colon cancer.
Researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic.
And they said tackling it required a new way of thinking, suggesting the public needed to be warned about the dangers of inactivity rather than just reminded of the benefits of being active.

When Do Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring Begin?
See chart below to see when seasons begin for 2012 and 2013—namely, the summer solstice, fall or autumnal equinox, winter solstice, and spring or vernal equinox.
The four seasons are determined by changing sunlight (not heat!)—which is determined by how our planet orbits the Sun and the tilt of its axis.

We may be fatter than we think, researchers report
A new study finds that the widely used body mass index, or BMI, may be understating obesity in many people.
The nation's obesity experts are searching for better ways to measure the nation's state of health and to judge the success or failure of treatment programs. (FDA, Lucas Jackson / February 28, 2012) |
As if the nation's weight problems were not daunting enough, a new study has
found that the body mass index, the
180-year-old formula used to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy weight,
may be incorrectly classifying about half of women and just over 20% of men as
being the picture of health when their body-fat composition suggests they are
obese.
The study, published Monday in the journal PLoS One, uses a patient's ratio of fat to lean muscle mass as the "gold standard" for detecting obesity and suggests that it could be a better bellwether of an individual's risk for health problems.
The researchers suggested that body fat would predict individuals' health risks better than the BMI. To measure fatness, they used a costly diagnostic test called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DXA, and calculated subjects' level of obesity based on fat-composition standards used by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.
The results also suggest that the BMI is a poor measure of fatness in men — but not always in a way that underestimates... Read More
